Pub Grub in the City of York
Tourists in York will find that many pubs serve food at lunchtimes and in the evenings. York pubs usually serve food from 12pm-2pm and from around 6pm to 9pm.
Leaving side the hybrid "gastropubs" for a moment (which are dealt with elsewhere on this site), the quality of the food (known colloquially as "pub grub") will vary from basic sandwiches or a Ploughmans' lunch to "chips with everything" and burgers, etc.
Most pubs that try to go beyond the basics will offer a similar menu selection often comprising scampi, fish and chips, possibly a roast beef and Yorkshire pud dish and almost certainly a mixed grill. Many pubs at this level of food provsion do not use professional chefs but rather the kitchen is run by the Landlord or his wife. Some excellent "home-cooked" style meals are available but equally many pubs are of the re-heated frozen meals variety. (I know I used to sell them!)
Vegetarians will probably find only one or two suitable dishes on any menu and they may be better off seeking out vegetarian restaurants - still if you know of pub with a good selection of vegetarian meals let us know and well publish their details here.
Visitors please note - all pubs in York are now non-smoking owing to government legislation. Consequently diners in York may now enjoy their meals in a smoke-free enviroment. Smokers who wish to indulge after the meal will find most pubs now provide an outdoor area where you may smoke. These areas are ususally covered to provide shelter from the Yorkshire weather, which can be a bit parky at times!
